Physical activity is a family affair
There is evidence to suggest that children of active parents are more likely to participate in physical activity, so being a good role model helps children understand and believe in the importance of regular exercise. Find time for the entire family to be active and make physical activity a habit rather than an exception. Family outings that involve physical activity can be beneficial for both parents and children.
Encourage lots of different activities as this will exercise a variety of muscle groups and help prevent boredom. Positive encouragement and involvement from parents will create healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Whether it be dancing to the Wiggles, kicking the ball in the backyard or enrolling in a new sport, finding what a child enjoys and supporting it increases the chances that children will enjoy being involved. Seek every opportunity for activity and have fun. Praise children for their efforts, help them practise their skills and become involved.
